Captain Brian G. Moynihan graduated from Gannon College in Erie, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1961. He received his Navy commission as an Ensign upon completion of the Officers Candidate School in November 1961 and reported to the USS MANSFIELD (DD-728) as an ASW Officer, where he served until 1963. His next assignment was as the Assistant Surface Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla NINE until 1966.

From 1966 to 1968 he served as the Weapons Officer aboard USS BENJAMIN STODDERT (DDG-22). In 1968 he was selected to participate in the Exchange Officer Program with the Royal Navy and served for two years at HMS VERNON. In 1970 he reported to the Staff of the Commander, Naval Forces Vietnam where he served for a year as the Plans Officer.

Subsequent assignments were: Executive Officer of the USS TOWERS (DDG-9) from 1972 to 1974: student at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island; and Placement Officer with the Chief of Naval Personnel in Washington, D.C. from 1975 to 1978.

In 1978 Captain Moynihan assumed command of the USS WADDELL (DDG-24). After two years as the Commanding Officer of the WADDELL, he reported to the Staff of Commander, Carrier Group THREE where he served as Surface OPS.

Next Captain Moynihan went to Recruiting District as Commanding Officer until 1985. He then went to the Navy Inspector General’s Office in Washington D.C. where he served until retirement in August 1989.

Captain Moynihan’s decorations include the Legion of Merit and Bronze Stars.

He is married to the former Carol Fendrick of Meridian, Idaho, and they have four children: Janet, Kathy, Sharon and Christina.
