Captain Athanasios S. Panagopoulos

Born in Athens, Greece on July 11, 1956. He was commissioned on September 20,1974.

He is a 1978 graduated of the Hellenic Naval Academy and completed additional training at:
    Navigation school, (N) “HMS MERCURY”
    Guided Missiles Fast Patrol Vessel School
    Electronic Warfare School
    Marine Meteorological School.
    Naval War College.
    National Defence College.
    Logistics School, AAHEN/GERMANY.

His previous experience as a Commanding Officer includes the periods:
    1991 – 1993 Gunboat “HS ARMATOLOS”
    1993 – 1994 Fast Patrol Boat with Guided Missiles “HS SIMITZOPOULOS” (P-28).
    1995 – 1997 Commander of 2nd Division of Guided Missiles Fast Patrol Vessels.
    2001 – 2002 Destroyer with Guided Missiles “HS NEARCHOS” (DDG-219).

His previous experience as Staff Officer was:
    1994 – 1995 Operational Staff Officer at the Hellenic Fleet (COMHELFLEET).
    1997 – 1998 Staff Officer at the Hellenic Ministry of  Defence (Military Personnel).
    1998 – 1999 Staff Officer (Logistics), at the Hellenic Navy General Staff (HNGS).
    1999 – 2001 Operational Staff Officer at NATO Headquarters (COMEDCENT) Rome-Italy.
    2002 - 2004 Director of Industrial Co operations / Director of Security at the Hellenic Ministry of Defence (General Secretariat for Financial Planning & Defence Investments).

The larger period (twenty years) of his career has been at Sea.

Captain A. Panagopoulos has been awarded for the following decorations:

He is married and he has a son (born Dec 1994). His interests are Photography, Sailing, Astronavigation. Present assignment: Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS), Director of Attaches’ Section.
